Dead by Daylight had to change course on one of its most anticipated collaborations, just days before the launch of its crossover with NieR Automata, the paid legendary outfit that transforms the survivor Feng Min into 2B, the iconic android protagonist of Square Enix’s game, and it drew a wave of criticism from players who argued that the design did not resemble the original character, to the point that Behaviour Interactive confirmed it would modify it to be much more faithful to the 2B everyone knows.
The decision comes after the community flooded social networks with comparisons between the Dead by Daylight outfit and the original 2B, pointing out everything from dirty, worn clothing that didn’t fit its aesthetic to differences in the character’s silhouette, and although there is not yet a confirmed date, the studio plans to apply the changes in a future bug-fix patch, an unusual response that demonstrates the weight fans carry when it comes to such recognizable characters, especially for content they paid for.
The importance of collaborations and community discontent
The figure of 2B sits at the core of NieR Automata’s story and aesthetic, so elements as distinctive as her black dress, the short white hair, and the eye blindfold are essential for the character to be instantly recognizable, and when a game conducts an official collaboration and the final model drifts too far from the original design, fans don’t see it as a mere cosmetic variant, but as a failure of the character’s identity.
This decision becomes especially relevant considering that Dead by Daylight has been on the market since June 2016 and features dozens of downloadable contents, making paid collaborations a key revenue stream.
However, the correction arrives at a delicate moment, as although Dead by Daylight holds mostly positive ratings on Steam, with more than 938,000 reviews, HappyGamer reviewed the 19 most helpful opinions and found that 12 were negative, many from veteran players with thousands of hours who feel the game has lost the essence and the fun of its early years.
The debate on social media and the controversy over character models
The news of the correction sparked a debate on social media, where opinions were highly divided about the developers’ work and the influence of the public.
The author of the original post, @Pirat_Nation, accompanied his message with comparative screenshots of before and after, and ironized that constant complaints to companies do end up yielding results.
“It seems that complaining and harassing these companies works”, he said.
