The followers of Diablo are receiving today a rather intriguing bit of news, as a developer known online as Troygentic released to the public DamnationX, a special edition of DevilutionX, the well-known open‑source project that allows playing the original Diablo 1 on modern computers. This new release adds high-definition textures, ray-traced lighting, and online co‑op, turning the 1996 classic that spawned the entire franchise into a much more modern experience that you can also play directly in the browser, without paying anything beyond your own copy of the game.
What we have here is a free, fan-made reinterpretation of the first Diablo, designed so that both seasoned players and those who have never tried it can traverse its dark dungeons with a level of visual quality that the original never possessed. Since you can either download it to your computer or open it from any browser, it stands as one of the fastest and easiest ways to face the Lord of Terror again alongside your friends.
The Current Visual Experience and the Development Status of Diablo 1
To put those who aren’t familiar with the history in context, Diablo 1 is a gothic-themed classic action role-playing game released in 1996, famed for its dark dungeons and its horror atmosphere, which served as the cornerstone of one of the most important franchises in the entire video game industry.
And now, talking about this new enhanced version, DSOGaming notes that it isn’t entirely clear whether the changes stem from the new lighting system or from the reworking of the images, but there is a sense that the game loses a bit of that dirty, dark, and bloody atmosphere that so defined the original release.
For this same reason, it would be great for its creator to revisit these new textures, because while they look stunning on most characters, the environments still require a bit more work to preserve the original essence, not to mention that we are looking at a very early iteration of this adaptation.
Given this initial state, it’s perfectly normal to encounter some bugs or technical glitches during play, but the creator has made it clear that things will improve over time as new updates are released, so a little patience is worth it.
Final Conclusions and How to Try It
Despite the remaining details to be polished in the environments and in performance, we’re looking at an impressive piece of work crafted by a true fan of the first Diablo. And since it is a free project, you only need your own copy of Diablo 1, which you can purchase on GOG, to give it a try at no additional cost.
So if, in the end, it doesn’t quite win you over, you can simply set it aside, because this is not an official Blizzard remake. But if you’ve always been curious to experience the classic Diablo with modern lighting and enhanced graphics, this is the perfect opportunity to try it yourself, following the instructions (in English) on the project’s page.
- Go to the DamnationX page on GitHub and head to the Releases section, in the right-hand column.
- Download the version for your system and unzip it into any folder on your computer.
- Find the DIABDAT.MPQ file in the folder of your copy of Diablo 1, whether from the original CD or the GOG installation.
- Copy that file into the DamnationX folder.
- Open the game executable and, if you want to play with friends, choose the multiplayer mode.
- If you’d rather not install anything, use the browser version from the project page, where you’ll be asked to load your DIABDAT.MPQ file.
