NVIDIA has just unveiled a new version of its DLSS Frame Generation technology, theoretically designed only for RTX 40, RTX 50 and the RTX Spark laptops, which includes a mode called Preset C capable of changing the way the card processes the image to offer up to 35% faster performance, in exchange for sacrificing only a little visual quality.

However, the independent developer community did not wait for the company and managed to enable the new Frame Generation on RTX 30 cards, older GPUs that NVIDIA left out, through a free mod called Universal MFG Unlocker 1.5.0 that works without official support, opening the door for thousands of players with components from earlier generations to enjoy this extra performance boost.

How does this modified program work and what improvements does it promise?

First of all, you should know that frame generation, powered by artificial intelligence, is a technology that creates and inserts entirely new images between each real frame that the game processes, so everything looks much smoother.

To achieve this, the system relies on two AI models that work simultaneously, where the first analyzes the movement of objects and the depth of the scene, while the second measures the optical flow of more complex elements such as the UI, menus, on-screen map, or lighting effects with ray tracing.

The big difference of the new Preset C is that it removes that second AI model and replaces it with a much faster and lighter algorithm, which significantly reduces the GPU resources consumed each time an extra frame is generated.

Now, the unofficial tool works with DLSS Frame Generation version 310.9.16 and allows selecting Preset C on both RTX 40 and RTX 30 series, whether from the mod’s own menu or from NVIDIA’s DLSS settings. In addition, the program enables multipliers to generate between 3 and 6 times more frames, the so-called multi-frame generation that NVIDIA reserves officially for the RTX 50 series.

On RTX 40s the mod runs smoothly, and in Wccftech they confirmed that they could enable multi-frame generation with Preset C on a system with an RTX 4090, achieving a substantial boost in game fluidity.

As if that weren’t enough, the same update adds compatibility with Intel XeSS Multi Frame Generation via OptiScaler, which allows generating from 2 to 6 times more frames on AMD, Intel and NVIDIA GPUs. And if you have an RTX 20, there is another mod called dlssg for sm86, by developer sdli1995, which also brings Preset C to RTX 20 and RTX 30, and in tests by users with an RTX 3080 Ti in a demanding title like Cyberpunk 2077 delivered between 10% and 30% more FPS.

Current tests and limitations of Frame Generation on RTX 30

Although Frame Generation on RTX 30 has successfully passed stability tests outside of games, showing a steadier frame rate when using high multipliers, there is still a key detail to consider.

The mod’s creator tested Preset C directly inside The Witcher 3 with an RTX 40 card, but with RTX 30s he has only verified compatibility outside of games, and has not yet confirmed how it performs in actual matches.

How to install the mod to enable Frame Generation on the RTX 30

If you want to try Frame Generation on RTX 30 on your computer, the installation is fairly straightforward and you only need to follow these steps, remembering that the game must be fully closed before moving any files.

  1. Go to the Universal MFG Unlocker download page on GitHub and download the file MFGUnlocker-v1.5.0.zip.
  2. Extract the file. Inside you’ll find a single file named MFGUnlocker.dll.
  3. Rename that file to dxgi.dll, version.dll or dinput8.dll, choosing one that does not already exist in the game folder to avoid replacing original files or other mods. In The Witcher 3 you must name it winmm.dll.
  4. Copy the renamed file into the folder where the game’s actual executable is located—the .exe that launches the game, not the launcher.
  5. Launch the game, enable Frame Generation in the graphics options, and press the Backspace key to open the mod’s menu.
  6. In the menu select Preset C (performance) and the frame multiplier you want to use, and then restart the game so the change takes effect. Preset C requires DLSS Frame Generation version 310.9.16, which installs automatically if you have the NVIDIA app updated.

To uninstall, simply close the game and delete the copied file. In addition, the creator warns that artifacts, freezes, black screens or unexpected crashes may occur, so it’s wise not to use it in online games with anti-cheat systems.

To conclude, it is warned that using this trick is mandatory for games to have DLSS Streamline technology integrated and to run under DirectX 12. And since NVIDIA does not provide official support for this function on the 30-series, performance and stability will vary by game, so that 35% increase is not fully guaranteed on RTX 30 cards yet.
