Free Download: The Order: 1886 PC Port — PS4 Exclusive Runs Without Emulator at 60 FPS

The action-adventure game The Order 1886, a PlayStation 4 exclusive released in 2015, has for the first time managed to run on computers without the need for an emulator, thanks to a PC port of The Order 1886 that runs at stable 30 FPS and which, with an experimental patch, nears 60 FPS, according to tests conducted by its creator.

This milestone marks a particularly significant moment for players, because Ready at Dawn’s work never received an official Windows adaptation, so until now the only way to play it on PC was via the shadPS4 emulator, which yields good results but performs best on powerful hardware. In this case, the project is the work of programmer mateussmeneses, who built on the foundation left by Felipe Prado, widely known in the community for bringing God of War III to PCs.

The Order 1886 Reaches PC Unofficially

First of all, and for those who may not be familiar with The Order 1886, we should note that it is a third-person action game set in an alternate and dark version of the Victorian era, where a legendary order of knights wields advanced technology and experimental firearms to combat fearsome mythological creatures and maintain order in the city.

At launch, the title made a tremendous impact thanks to its hyper-realistic visuals and its presentation that was indistinguishable from a feature film, becoming one of the most important visual benchmarks to showcase the technical power of the PS4 at the time.

That is why the significance of an unofficial PC port lies in opening the door to improvements impossible to achieve on the original console, such as playing on ultra-wide screens, something the latest version allows by choosing between the original cinema format with letterboxing, 16:9, 16:10, or 21:9. Add to this the ability to remove performance bottlenecks to play with unprecedented smoothness and for fans to continue refining the work as the years go by.

Rather than copying or mimicking the console’s internal hardware, as a typical emulator would, this The Order 1886 port executes the game’s original code directly on Windows and replaces the PS4 system libraries with its own, while the graphics are translated to Vulkan, ensuring that the graphics card executes each instruction directly, efficiently, and straightforwardly.

Surprisingly, despite being in a very early stage of development, the port manages to recreate the original’s astonishing graphical quality, showing dense fog, dynamic lighting, complex shadow maps, and all the cinematic effects of Victorian London with no visible errors in the 3D models, which confirms that the code conversion to modern graphics cards was done with great care.

However, the project remains a work in progress and needs optimization, because, although it sustains 30 frames per second in the prologue, the initial session suffers small stutters while the graphics are being prepared, and occasionally a black triangle appears for a brief moment. In addition, for now only the opening of the first chapter has been tested, with a notebook RTX 5060 card, so the rest of the campaign, sound, and operation on AMD and Intel cards have not yet been verified.

For this reason, its creator continues to work daily, fixing critical code errors and improving image processing to guarantee solid smoothness, and is making rapid progress, having released three versions in just over 13 hours. The most recent, 0.3.0, fixed an unexpected crash when loading a save and a blue screen that appeared after the prologue.

Reception of the Original game’s Fan Community

The buzz around the progress quickly spread on social media, where the X user Pirat_Nation shared the news and received English responses full of excitement from players. One fan noted that “The Order 1886 still has one of the best lighting setups of the entire PS4 era, so seeing it run natively on PC is a delight; I’m curious to know how much of the adaptation was done by hand versus tooling.”

Similarly, another player commented with passion, “Damn! I’m really excited about this project; I’ve been a fan of The Order 1886 since day one,” while a third celebrated, saying, “Awesome! I Platinumed this game a year ago; the visuals and artistic style are so good, all that’s needed is to run it at 4K60 and I’d love to see that on PC.”

And that, to close, this achievement of getting The Order 1886 to run on PC without an emulator represents a historic triumph for the gaming community, because it opens the door to leaving behind the 30 FPS limit, something that the 60 FPS experimental mode is starting to achieve with an average of 57 FPS, and to enjoy this PS4 title in maximum quality.

All interested parties can download the free The Order 1886 port from its GitHub version page, noting that it does not include the game’s files, so each player must use their own PS4 copy, in version CUSA00035 01.02. To run, it requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, an AVX-compatible processor, and a Vulkan 1.3-compatible graphics card with up-to-date drivers.

  1. Download the file theorder1886-windows.zip from the project’s GitHub versions page.
  2. Unzip the file into any folder on your computer.
  3. Open The Order 1886.exe. If Windows blocks it, click “More information” and then “Run anyway.”
  4. In the Game tab, choose the folder of your copy of the game, the one that contains eboot.bin, sce_module and sce_sys.
  5. Press PLAY. The first start is slower, because the program prepares the graphics.
  6. If you want more fluidity, enable the 60 FPS experimental mode from the startup program.
