Indie Studio Changes Protagonist’s Run Animation After Criticism; Fans Demand the Original

The independent Japanese studio Ouloboros Studio is currently working on SaviorS: Oath of the Blade, a promising action-RPG roguelite whose release is scheduled for 2027 on PC via Steam, a project that in recent days has showcased the impact a small visual detail can have after its creators changed the running animation of the protagonist.

Indeed, several players criticized that the heroine’s running animation looked “unnatural” as she moved forward, so the team adjusted it to be more realistic. Yet the change ended up splitting the community almost evenly between those who prefer the agility of the new version and those who miss the initial, charming, novice-like allure of the design, which is why the studio is evaluating integrating both visions through a system where the way she runs and how she grips the sword evolve as the protagonist grows.

The Two Opposing Opinions Between Visual Fidelity and Personality

This game stands out for offering a premise that blends exploration of a procedurally generated map from a top-down perspective with close-quarters combat in a side-scrolling format, which is why the development team regularly shares progress of their pixelated characters on the X social network to maintain direct contact with their followers.

It was in that space where the heroine’s sprint with her sword drawn sparked a major conversation, because after receiving comments indicating that her movement looked odd while advancing, the studio posted that “as there were many opinions in that regard, we are adjusting the animation,” in words originally in Japanese.

Before the adjustment, the young protagonist advanced with a slightly clumsy yet incredibly endearing and charismatic style, holding her weapon raised behind her shoulder as a novice warrior just starting her journey, while with the new version the animation team made her hold the sword pointing toward the ground and adopted a more forward-leaning posture.

This change ended up projecting a much more agile, professional, and cool image, a visual transformation that immediately drew the attention of the player community that closely follows the project’s posts.

The Company’s Response and the Evolution of the Character

If this idea comes to be, it would allow players themselves to see the heroine transition from a clumsy style to a refined and expert motion as she progresses on her journey, while SaviorS: Oath of the Blade remains on track for a Steam debut in 2027.
