World of Warcraft Forever Bets on a Slower Pace as Players Reject the Constant Rush of Modern Games

World of Warcraft Forever has hooked many players in its beta, and Blizzard believes its success stems from how exhausted modern users are by the stress of daily life and by time-gated games that demand rapid progression, so they have found in this permanent version an ideal refuge that lets them advance at their own pace without the pressure of falling behind, just ahead of its launch on November 4 on PC via Battle.net, with over 1,000 new quests, revamped zones and a new playable race.

Clay Stone, the associate director of production for this content at Blizzard, spoke about it recently with PC Gamer, whose journalist noted that, although World of Warcraft Forever tries to imitate an era that many consider much harder, it’s a real relief not to have to deal with all that tedious repetitive work of current seasons, demonstrating, at the same time, that sometimes returning to simpler and slower mechanics is exactly what people need to start enjoying again.

The problem of games that last a single season

To understand this phenomenon better, one must look at what happened with earlier versions and how the company noticed that people actually stayed playing long-term, since, as the developer himself explains, “We saw, certainly with the success of Classic and the response to it, that it was more than just a nostalgic experience for some people. The fact that they didn’t leave, you know? They didn’t play just for a month.”

He adds that these fans “fell back in love with it. Then we saw a lot of it again with Hardcore in 2023. Suddenly, you had a bunch of people who had never played the game before, but were coming in thanks to that slower pace, and the fact that Hardcore reinforced that slower pace for them.”

But all this isn’t just about slow leveling; it also has a lot to do with how the game is built overall, since earlier versions like Season of Discovery relied on seasons that brought good things but also very bad things, highlighting that the biggest problem is that if you miss the start of a season you lose all motivation to play.

Something the developer notes they strongly noticed in earlier releases, because “We had so many players who didn’t even play the Season of Discovery simply because it was a Season, even though they had friends saying ‘this is the best World of Warcraft version they’ve ever made!’ But since it was a season, it felt ephemeral, and therefore [people thought] ‘I’m not going to join.’”

For this reason, the PC Gamer reporter testing it says World of Warcraft Forever feels like they took all the good from those past ideas but put them into a game that will never disappear, which worries him a bit about his free time, because even knowing that his test character will be wiped, he cannot stop playing because of that sense of peace you get from striking monsters in a world that asks nothing of you.

World of Warcraft Forever, an escape from the noise of the modern world

This sense of calm stands in stark contrast to our daily life, which is full of pressures and tasks, something the development team understands very well when they reflect on the general fatigue people feel, saying that “it could be related to the times we live in,” and then adding that there is a real annoyance with “the amount of information and noise we face all the time, the distractions of all the notifications on my phone that ring every day, but there is a real longing for that slower and more deliberate pace.”

It is because of this fatigue from real life that the way players approach this virtual world has dramatically changed in recent weeks, as the creators say, “And I think something we’ve seen in these last weeks, and that I’m really glad to see, is that players coming to WoW Forever, whether they’ve played World of Warcraft before or not, are trying not to rush. There seems to be a deliberate rejection of this ‘let’s go, let’s go’ nature.”

Although this relaxed atmosphere remains, the creators aren’t against those who prefer to play fast, trying to secure the best gear possible and be ultra-efficient, as they insist, “We love them too. We think they’re great, and the endgame content is going to be spectacular.”

However, the main goal will always be to maintain a friendly and accessible space for everyone, avoiding that horrible feeling of arriving late to the party, because, as they explain, “But we are deliberately trying to build something with WoW Forever that answers that question of… ‘Is it too late to start?’. With an emphatic ‘no’ as often as possible.”

Something that, in closing, demonstrates that the horizontal progression system, in which the character gains more options rather than becoming ever more powerful, is a great move that welcomes anyone no matter when they decide to start playing.
